When you create a Google Business Profile for your company, you need to ensure you use your business email address to keep things separate.

But what if you’ve accidentally setup your Google Business Profile with a personal Gmail address?

UPDATE: We’ve updated this post on March 24, 2023 to reflect the new Google Business Profile name, settings and updated screenshots.

Looking through articles online, specially the ones from Google support chats/threads/resources will only confuse you even more…

There’s a simple solution!

    • Enter your business name into Google search and your Google Business Profile should show up at the top of the page. If you don’t see it, make sure you are logged into Chrome with the Gmail address you’ve used to set up your account.

  • Click the drop down menu and select “Business Profile Settings”.

  • Click on the “Managers” option, where you can add and remove an email address.

  • Click “Add” to enter your new email address and select owner, so you can make edits to your account.

  • Once you accept the invitation to become the new owner that you’ve received by email, the other user with your personal email address will therefore become a regular user of this page
  • Go back to “Managers” option and delete the user related to your personal email address

Voila!

It does not let you delete the Primary Owner

    • Aurelien 2 November 2021 at 8:22 am - Reply

      Hi Mandi,

Thank you for your comment. If you follow our suggestions within this article, you would change the email address then set the new one as the “Primary Owner”, then you could delete any other users if you wish. It’s normal that it doesn’t let you delete the “Primary Owner”, it’s necessary to run your page. Just change who the Primary Owner is then delete the unwanted ones.

      We hope it helps! 🙂

Hey There! I had the same problem. I accidentally signed up with my personal email. I did as you advised and added my business email. However it doesn’t give you the option to make it the primary owner. It only has invited owner. Does it matter what account email it’s under? And also what happens if you would like to change your business email at some point?

    • Aurelien 2 November 2021 at 8:21 am - Reply

      Hi Peta,

      Thank you for your questions.

We believe that to make your new email address the primary owner, you would need to sign in with the original email address then make the new one the primary owner, you may want to try that.

It would be better if you were setup as the owner of your Google My Business (GMB) page, it would allow you to better control it, even if one day you decide to add a marketing agency like us to have access to help you with your marketing objectives.

If you need to change your business email address at one point in the future, you can either replace it again in GMB or you can redirect your old email address to your new one, outside of your GMB page. This means that any emails sent to your old email address would be redirected and GMB would still ask you to connect using the old one. To make your life easier, we would suggest to change your email address again in GMB if you have a new one, better to keep things simple!

      Thank you,

I signed up with a personal email by mistake. Now I followed the steps listed above, added my business email as a new user, then logged in with my primary to assign primary owner role to my buisness email. Despite doing all the steps and suggestions mentioned above, I do not get the option to assign primary owner role to my business email.

      Hi Sakshi,

We’re sorry you couldn’t make it work. Usually, if you follow these steps carefully, it should work.
If not, we advise you to contact Google directly to find a solution.

If anyone else has a solution to suggest, feel free to comment!

      Thank you,

Just as an aside, you also have to wait at least 7 days to be able to change the primary owner 🙂

        • Aurelien 7 June 2022 at 3:05 am - Reply

Thanks Amanda for your comment. You’re right, however, the 7 days wait is not to change the primary owner but to manage all features of the Google Business Profile. So when you’ve changed the primary owner, it will work well but only after 7 days this new owner will be able to make meaningful changes to the profile.

you need to log in to the email which you want to transfer to accept the invitation. then gonback to business page to do the transfer

Thanks Shiki, yes indeed, we believe this is the missing link for Sakshi to make it work.

I made the mistake of creating my business account under my personal email. I have followed all the steps above and it worked. I can now control my business account from my correct (business) email. The problem is however, I’m still receiving all emails to do with my google business account to the incorrect (personal) email. Is there a step or something that I’m missing? I need everything to do with my Business Account to only go to my business email – how do I completely disable my personal account from google business account?

    Thank you for your help!

    • Aurelien 2 November 2021 at 5:01 am - Reply

      Hi Margaux,

Thank you for your question. Have you tried logging into your GMB page using your business email, going to “Users” and removing your personal email?
This way, only your business email should receive notifications related to your GMB page.

Let us know how it goes and if someone else has another solution, feel free to share!

      Thank you,

    Hi,

I just created my Google My Business page for my real estate job. However, I received a confirmation email at the wrong email address. I have two jobs & two separate email accounts. Somehow the wrong contact email is linked & I need to change that. Currently it is jsouth@wildwoodprograms.org. That is the wrong email. It should be jsouth@bhhsblake.com. I have tried to follow the instructions to fix this but it’s too confusing. Help!

Hi, I followed your instructions to change my personal GMB email to my Business email (from Google Workspace) and I see that this will work; however, I would like to use a Google Workspace “alias” email, which when I try to do this keeps defaulting to my original Google Workspace email. Can you help? Thank you so much!

    • Aurelien 2 November 2021 at 4:59 am - Reply

      Hi Lisa,

We’re glad this post has helped you!

In regards to your specific question, an alias is usually used when you know you don’t need a full email account under your Google Workspace account. As an example, your main email account could be lisa@example.com but you would create an alias of lisa@example.com such as marketing@example.com. This alias doesn’t really exist, if someone sends an email to marketing@, it will land in the lisa@ inbox.

To create an alias, you’ll need to access your admin space of Google Workspace. Your alias shouldn’t be the login email you use to login to your GMB page, it’s better to use a real email account just in case.

If you still experience issues, specifically with your Google Workspace alias, we would recommend to login to your admin space and contact their 24/7 support, they’re usually very helpful.

If anyone else would like to help Lisa, feel free to contribute!

The issue with this is, it works however gmail does not let you delete the primary user. there is no option for that. you can only change the owner.

      Hi Rumi,

Thank you for your comment. We’re glad our suggestions work. We’re not sure if Google allows to remove this user that is no longer needed, have you had any luck doing some research online or contacting them?

If anyone else knows if we can remove this unused user, feel free to share in the comments!

I have the same problem as other people. I did everything as I should to change the email address. I sent the invitation to my bussiness address to change the owner but when I try to accept it, it only gives me an option to sign in as my private gmail account again. My bussiness account is not on google or gmail. Might this be the issue?

    • Aurelien 2 November 2021 at 4:57 am - Reply

      Hi Martina,

Thank you for your comment. Yes, you’re right, as it’s a Google service, you would need to use either a Gmail or a Google Workspace (previously Google Suite) email address. Try doing this and let us know how it goes.

If anyone else has other suggestions, feel free to contribute in the comments!

    This didn’t work for me
There was no “user” option in the menu

    • Aurelien 2 November 2021 at 4:56 am - Reply

      Hi Ross,

Sorry to hear you can’t see the “Users” option on your end. Are you indeed going to business.google.com? You need to click your own Google My Business page (in case you manage multiple ones) then the “Users” option should be on the left sidebar towards the bottom.

If you don’t see it, it may be due to permissions level, are you an admin of your GMB page? If not, you may need to ask the admin to provide you with full rights or alternatively, you can click “Support” on that left sidebar at the bottom and contact GMB support directly.

We hope it will work for you soon!

If anyone else has another suggestion, feel free to help Ross here in the comments!

      Thanks,

It works you just need to log into the new account you just made owner and select the option to make it the primary owner. After this, it will allow you to remove the other owner.

So I work for an agency that manages the GMB accounts for some of our partners. I have one partner that wants to change their GMB email because they no longer have access to the one that was initially used to set up the account and Google is unable to help them recover that account. By adding the email address they want and making it the primary owner, does that help with what is wanting to be done here?

    • Aurelien 4 January 2022 at 4:41 am - Reply

      Hi Shari,

Thank you for your question. We believe it could help, this would be a perfect situation to recover access by adding a new “Primary” owner to the account. If you’re still managing it, you could potentially do this for them.
Let us know how it goes!

hello how to solve if my GMB address automatically gets change

    • Aurelien 9 January 2023 at 1:51 am - Reply

      Thanks for your question Diya.
We’re not sure what you mean by “your GMB address automatically gets changed”. Usually, it doesn’t change unless you or someone who has access to your account changes it manually. Could someone else have access to your account potentially?
